Organizational Communication

Organizational Communication
The study of organizational communication involves analyzing the role of communication in various stages and contexts of development, management, leadership styles, employee attitudes, and other interrelated elements of organizations.
Description
Contemporary theories and studies in organizational communication play a significant role in the construction, development, maintenance, and dissemination of information in modern organizations. The importance of organizational communication as a discipline cannot be overstated in today’s society; as nearly everyone is involved with at least one, if not multiple, organizations in their personal and professional lives.
Challenges
Successful organizational communication requires the identification of barriers to effective communication within and between organizations and outside members of the organization. Thus, organizational communication must demonstrate competencies in the removal of barriers through structural changes, policy shifts, utilization of communication and media technologies, and the effectual training and development of organizations and its members.
Opportunities
The Institute of Communication Research (ICR) is currently working on several projects related to organizational communication; including studies of emergency preparedness in government agencies and strategies for weather-prediction organizations. We are working with these organizations to create methods to effectively and efficiently transmit communication between members, among organizations, and to the public. Some of the relevant theoretical implications include communication proxemics, strategic alliances theory, collaboration theories, and structural holes theory.
