The Institute for Communication Research is an interdisciplinary organization that seeks to enhance research, teaching, and service opportunities for those professionals focusing efforts on critical communication issues involving contexts of risk, health, organizations, communication science, and evaluation research. The Institute serves as an infrastructure support system that facilitates funding opportunities, empirical research, networking capabilities, and community outreach. The Institute also supports and mentors graduate students interested in communication research.

Dr. Dan O'Hair - Director Resume PDF
Dan O’Hair received his Ph.D. in 1982 from The University of Oklahoma in communication. He is Professor in the Department of Communication at The University of Oklahoma and is Director of the Institute for Communication Research. He serves as the President of the National Communication Association, the world’s largest and oldest professional association devoted to the study of communication. He has published over seventy research articles in risk and health communication, business communication, management, and psychology journals and volumes, and has authored and edited fifteen books in the areas of communication, risk management, health, and terrorism. His latest book, published by Hampton Press is entitled The Handbook of Cancer Care and Communication to appear in 2006. In 2005, he published a volume with Praeger focusing on communication, terrorism and emergency preparedness. He serves as senior editor and contributor to the Handbook for Risk and Crisis Communication to be published by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates in 2007. He has directed eighteen doctoral dissertations and served on over fifty doctoral and masters committees since his arrival at OU twelve years ago. He has been the principal investigator or Co-PI for several grants from business, non-profit, and government institutions totaling more than $4 million. He has served on the editorial boards of twenty-seven research journals and is a past editor of the Journal of Applied Communication Research, published by the National Communication Association. Articles published in JACR have been referenced or reviewed by such publications as the Wall Street Journal and the Harvard Communication Letter. He has served as a consultant to dozens of private, non-profit and government organizations.

Eileen is a fourth year doctoral student in the Communication Department of the University of Oklahoma (OU) studying with Dan O’Hair. Her primary research interest is health communication, with an emphasis in the interpersonal, organizational, and risk communication group interactions within the aging, palliative care, and end-of-life populations. She has held a graduate teaching assistantship since 2003, serving as the basic course director during the 2005-2006 school year. The University of Oklahoma Graduate College presented her with the 2006 Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award. Additionally, the OU Department of Communication presented her with the 2005 Outstanding Graduate Student Award.

Toni is a third year doctoral student, graduate teaching assistant, and research assistant. Her research interests include health communication, with an emphasis on patient safety issues. Related areas of interest include risk and organizational communication. Toni completed her M.A. thesis on communication competence, social support, and perceived coping of lay caregivers for patients with Alzheimer's disease, and her dissertation focuses on hospital and patient safety issues. In addition, Toni teaches various undergraduate courses including Principles of Communication, Public Speaking, and Business and Professional Communication.
